On 2 August, JAAGA Misawa Branch supported USAF airmen and their families
of Misawa Air Base to participate '08 Nebuta Festival carried out in Aomori
City from 2 Aug. to 7 Aug.. 2nd of August was the first day of Nebuta Festival
this year. Unfortunately rainfall probability of Armoire area was estimated
about 90% afternoon on 2 Aug. by influence of front. Service of bus to
Nebuta Festival was cancel, so many peoples were not able to participate
to this event. But about 20 peoples left Misawa for Aomori with their own
transportation. They wore Haneto-costume under assistance of members of
International Cooperation Division of Armoire City Government. American
peoples are so tall and big, so assisting peoples were struggling to fit
costume on them. The students of Ed Glen High School on Misawa AB. put
on Haneto costume charmingly. After wearing costume, we took some food
there and waited to Nebuta Dancing Parade. Just after Nebuta floats started
to move, drizzly rain begun to fall. The spectators on Nebuta's route put
on rainwears or put up umbrellas. But big shout "Lasse-La", strong
whistle sound and drumbeat by Nebuta Dancing groups seemed to make raining
stop. Though Nebuta floats were covered with transparent vinyl sheet, when
lamps inside of float turned on light, they looked so gorgeous as usual. International
Cooperation Division had planed to quit Haneto parade on half way of route
because of rain, but nobody stopped dancing and paraded whole way of Nebuta
route. An airman said "I feel regret that I will be able to join Nebuta
Festival just one more time because of my assignment at Misawa." I
absolutely agree with him. (Reported by Ozawa, head of JAAGA Misawa branch)
